English 9 (110)
Ninth grade English is an introduction to high school literature. The curriculum emphasizes the integrated study of literature, composition, grammar and vocabulary. The literature component consists of the study of a variety of multi-cultural short stories, poems, and novels. In addition, the students learn to write and review various types of essays and poetry writing. The grammar component is integrated so that the students learn grammar within the context of the literature they are studying. Expansion of student vocabulary is achieved through use of the literature book and vocabulary workbooks. The student will also use the library to locate information from various sources, develop skills in note taking, and use a computer. Students will learn to deliver an oral presentation.
English 10 (130)
Prerequisite: English 9
The English 10 curriculum consists of five strands: reading and literature; composition; grammar and usage; vocabulary; and oral expression. The literature includes short stories, poetry, novels, drama, and non-fiction. The composition component emphasizes various methods of development: content, structure, usage, mechanics, revision and timed practiced. Vocabulary study is approached through use of the literature book and vocabulary workbooks. Oral expression includes formal presentations, as well as participation in class discussions and in reading of dramatic works.
English 11 (150)
Prerequisite: English 9-10
This is an American Literature course. It follows American history to demonstrate how literature reflects the times. The emphasis is on comprehensive and critical reading and writing (content, structure, usage, mechanics, revision and timed practice). Short stories, poetry, drama, novels and non-fiction are read with a special attention given to the biographies of the writers who created them. Vocabulary development is an important element to this class. Students give oral presentations. Documentation of Modern Language Association (MLA) is taught.
Senior Writing (175)
Prerequisite: English 11
This course will fulfill the fourth-year English requirement for seniors who enter after the start of the semester and who do not qualify for College Writing 100 or 101. Its emphasis will be the writing process, vocabulary development, and the analysis of literature.
Creative Writing/Poetry (157)
Prerequisite: English 9 and 10
This course will focus on the writing, reading, and analyzing of both contemporary and non-contemporary poetry. Students will learn to craft their poems through a writer’s workshop and will be required to turn in new poems once every two weeks. An end-of-the-semester portfolio will contain original and revised drafts of their work, demonstrating their progress.
Writing 100 (181)
Prerequisite: English 11 and Pima College Writing Assessment Placement.
Dual enrollment (3 credit hours) .
This college-level course is designed to prepare students for Writing 101 and Writing 102. Its focus will be on writing a variety of sentence patterns, organizing ideas in coherent paragraphs, writing short essays of 3-5 paragraphs, and producing a total semester output of 6,000 words.
Writing 101 (179)
Prerequisite : Pima College Writing Assessment Placement or Completion of WRT 100.
Dual enrollment (3 credit hours).
This college-level course focuses on the writing process and is equivalent to Writing 101. Students will write the types of in-class and out-of-class essays, which are expected in the professional/academic setting. A total semester output of 7,000 words is required.
Writing 102 (180)
Prerequisite: Writing 101
Dual enrollment (3 credit hours).
This second semester college course focuses on writing critically about literature, including poetry, drama, prose fiction, and literary non-fiction. Students will research primary and secondary sources and write a 7-10 page paper using the techniques of quotations, paraphrase, summary, and use of documentation.
SAT Language Skills (151)
The purpose of this one semester course is to prepare students for the new three part SAT / ACT Critical Reading and Writing subtests. Students will develop strategies for dealing with sentence completion, passage based reading, identifying sentence errors, critical reading, and writing impromptu essays.
ESL/Beginning (121)
This two-hour block course is designed for students with a limited English proficiency. It will introduce the student to basic oral and written English forms. It will serve as a forum to answer the English as a second language student’s questions about American culture and other subjects that they are studying. Students will explore a variety of ideas in several academic disciplines: history, biology, economics, and mathematics and geography. Students will increase their reading fluency, comprehension critical thinking skills, and vocabulary.
ESL/Intermediate (122)
Prerequisite: Completion of Beginning ESL with grade C or better, or consent of instructor.
This course is a continuation of Beginning ESL. It will continue the instruction and practice in the use of English grammatical patterns in both spoken and written English. It will emphasize correct use of verb forms, and correct use of subordinate clauses. Course is designed for students to develop overall reading proficiency including main ideas, supporting details, summary writing and critical thinking. |
